We had our first Christmas Bat Count at T.R.E.E.S.

We had our first Christmas Bat Count at T.R.E.E.S.!

The Christmas Bat Count is coordinated by RELCOM (Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe para la Conservación de los Murciélagos) and has been organized by over a dozen Latin American organizations for more than 10 years!

Here in Belize, we are still growing our network of bat enthusiasts. This was our first attempt, and it was a success! 🥳

We had 7 Belizeans and 6 expats join our bat mist netting demonstration.

In total, we caught 60 bats over 3 days! Some highlights included:
• 4 Spix’s disc-winged bats roosting in a heliconia leaf
• 2 Lophostoma nicaraguae roosting in a termite nest
• A visit to Pomona Cave, where we observed vampire bats and sac-winged bats!

Our participation in the Christmas Bat Count contributes to RELCOM’s larger database, helping track which species are present in different regions. We’re committed to continuing our efforts to monitor bat species diversity at T.R.E.E.S.

Evelyn has been a beloved friend of T.R.E.E.S sinc

Evelyn has been a beloved friend of T.R.E.E.S since we began our journey in 2011. Now, she’s in urgent need of our help.

After returning to Guatemala in 2019 following the loss of her husband, Evelyn has recently moved back to Belize to secure permanent residency and be closer to her 3 children.

Unfortunately, this past weekend she experienced severe abdominal pain, leading to a hospital visit where she was diagnosed with gallstone pancreatitis—a serious condition that requires immediate surgery.

The costs are mounting: over $1,000 USD for initial tests and medications, plus an additional $2,500 USD for the emergency procedure, not to mention ambulance and other fees totaling $800 USD. These are funds that neither T.R.E.E.S nor her family can provide.

We’re asking our community for support. 💖 Any contribution, big or small, can make a huge impact on Evelyn’s recovery and future.

Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa), a common migrant to Belize off the breeding season. They appear to have high site fidelity and we recapture many of the same individuals year after year.

The oldest recorded individual of this species was at least 8 years old and recaptured in Alabama. One of the key pieces of vital information we are able to gain from banding. The only way to get an idea how old wild birds live…pretty cool!

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques Internship. Currently, 4 positions are open for summer internships in 2023, here at our beautiful T.R.E.E.S. Research Center in the Maya Mountains of Belize. Over 60 different bat species have been recorded on our property!

Want to spend time living and learning about the jungle in the beautiful country of Belize? Want to learn how to handle bats and study their ecology? Then this is the internship for you!

The goal of this internship is to give the student various experiences in tropical bat studies that will aid the student in developing their skills for a variety of future education and employment opportunities. The main component of the project will be to work with T.R.E.E.S biologists and staff in establishing long-term bat monitoring projects (mist-netting, habitat characterization, mark-recapture). These baseline data will contribute to future ecological studies (breeding season, migration, activity phases, species composition) on bat populations present on the T.R.E.E.S property and elsewhere in the adjacent protected areas in the Maya Mountains.

Terms:
• Start-date: now
• Length of position: minimum 4 weeks; longer is preferable.
• Schedule: 30 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
• Fees for the Apprenticeship: $479 USD/week which includes all tutorship, equipment, food & lodging
• To handle bats you must have proof of up-to-date rabies immunity, including a recent titer if you received the vaccine more than two years ago.
